GloPe – Language Issues (Video)

We experimented with different ways we can play the sections we already had, primarily the Briff, and practiced moving between them. We are using simple signals at the moment, of one of the drummers raising a hand, but as this is somewhat limiting, I doubt it’s what we will use later on.

GloPe – Another Drummer (Video)

GloPe – Beginnings (Video)

Today we started experimenting with ideas for our Global Perspectives project. We wanted to create a piece of music with no fixed structure, where the structure was improvised during the piece, yet controlled by all members of the band.

We started by Jamming around some musical ideas, using some of Steve Reich’s work as inspiration.

After we had come up with a few sections we liked the sound of, we started experimenting with methods of controlling the structure, after trying vocal commands and deeming them impractical, we tried using standing up or sitting down as a control method. Each player had a section of the piece linked to their actions, and could move to that section by standing up (or sitting, if they were already standing). The change was coordinated by the drummer doing a fill into each change.
